THE WARTIME DIARY OF HERBERT GARDINER

The diary of Herbert Gardiner was written during his service in the 14th Hussars during his army service in WWI.  His daughter Jean Gardiner has given her permission for a copy to be given to the Hallow History Group and for it to be used as thought appropriate by the group.

The background colour of the pages in this copy is an accurate rendering of the original.  The pages have been enlarged to enable easier reading.

Reference to Herbert Gardiner has been made in the group’s publication ‘Hallow Farms and Mills Past and Present’.  Herbert’s father was the farmer at Headway’s Farm in Hallow for a number of years.  Herbert and his brothers were expected to give their services for little reward and as a consequence after leaving the army, Herbert moved out to Claines to farm a smallholding.

VILLAGE LIFE IN WARTIME

The  Hallow Parish Magazine which also included parish news from Broadheath and Comer Gardens, was published throughout the War and the bound volumes are held in the Worcestershire Archive, The Hive, Worcester, where they can be viewed in the “Original Documents” section.  We have taken extracts from them which we feel reflect Parishioners’ lives at that time, and to read them please click here –    Extracts from Parish Magazine WWI



WARTIME CLUBS & SOCIETIES
Hallow and Broadheath Parish Magazines were published throughout WWI.  They recorded the meetings and events in our district, just as our magazines and flyers do today.  To read more, click here

On Remembrance Sunday 11th November 2018, we honoured our soldiers who did not survive when fighting on our behalf to protect our values.

In particular, this year also was 100 years since the end of World War I.  A special Remembrance service was held in our church, St. Philip and St. James, and events were held to mark the occasion in surrounding villages.

A special edition of the magazine for the parishes of Hallow and Grimley, with Holt, was researched and compiled as a tribute to all those from our Benefice who gave their lives during the two World Wars.  This magazine can be viewed here.
